Original Text (The Judgment)
Făng intimates progress and development. When a king has reached the point (which the name denotes) there is no occasion to be anxious (through fear of a change). Let him be as the sun at noon.
Translation
The Hexagram Feng (Abundance). Holding a sacrifice, the king will personally attend the ancestral temple. Do not worry, the best time is at midday. The Image says: The upper trigram of this hexagram is Zhen, Zhen is thunder; the lower trigram is Li, Li is lightning. Lightning and thunder together show a major celestial phenomenon revealed by heaven, which is also the image of the hexagram Feng. In observing this image, the superior man, inspired by the brilliance and majesty of lightning and thunder, decides lawsuits and administers punishments.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Grandeur and fullness, acquiring wealth and gaining profit; plans and hopes will be fulfilled, and there will surely be celebrations. Minor luck: For those who obtain this hexagram, their fortune is strong, undertakings can succeed, and both fame and fortune can be gained. However, one should not be overly greedy, but rather find contentment in what one has, and guard against sorrow arising from extreme joy, loss of wealth, or even fire hazards.
Fu Peirong's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: Momentum is at its peak; remain cautious and careful.
- Wealth 财运: Profits are very abundant; one must guard against lawsuits.
- Household 家宅: Suitable to face southeast; a match made in heaven.
- Health 身体: Rising liver-fire; quiet rest is appropriate.
Takashima Donsho's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: Fortune is flourishing, but in times of abundance one must not forget times of scarcity, so that abundance may be long preserved.
- Business 营商: Wealth and profits are abundant, but one must act fairly and hold fast to caution, otherwise there is fear of involvement in lawsuits.
- Fame & Career 功名: Thunder and lightning are signs of prestigious renown and advancement; suitable for serving as a judicial officer.
- Warfare 战征: Thunder and lightning both arrive, showing illustrious military might and far-reaching prestige; offensive battles are sure to conquer.
- Marriage 婚姻: The world calls thunder the husband and lightning the wife; it is a union made by heaven.
- Household 家宅: The house faces southeast; the flow of wealth is quite abundant.
- Illness 疾病: It is an illness of rising liver-fire; formulas that clear the liver and purge fire are suitable, and quiet rest is especially appropriate.
- Lost Items 失物: Pursue immediately, and it can be recovered.
- Travelers 行人: Guard against involvement in lawsuits.
- Pregnancy 六甲: Giving birth in odd months yields a boy, in even months yields a girl.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by stacking two different trigrams (Li below, Zhen above). Lightning flashes and thunder rolls, leading to great achievements, symbolizing reaching the summit like the midday sun. Warning: One must pay close attention to things moving in the opposite direction; prosperity and decline are inconstant, and one must remain vigilant.
- Overall Image 大象: Thunder and lightning mingle, creating great momentum; furthermore, Li as the sun moves across the sky, shining upon the earth, all of which are signs of grandeur.
- Fortune 运势: Fortune is extremely strong, a time of harvest, but one should not be insatiably greedy; find contentment in what you have, guard against disputes, loss of wealth, or even fire hazards.
- Career 事业: Situated in an extremely smooth and peak period, everything is proceeding well, and achievements are great. However, one must pay close attention to the initial signs of decline, nip problems in the bud, and strictly guard against pride and complacency. At the same time, do not blindly pursue impractical things, but put all effort into extending the current state.
- Business 经商: Due to accurately grasping market trends, business conditions are highly favorable to oneself, allowing for bold expansion; however, one must pay close attention to market conditions and analyze information, as even a minor oversight could lead to bankruptcy overnight. Once bankrupt, immediately summarize lessons and seek sincere partners to escape the predicament as early as possible.
- Seeking Fame 求名: Through effort and struggle, achievements have been made; one should pay attention to maintaining and steadily developing them, and avoid pursuing empty fame.
- Love & Marriage 婚恋: Can succeed and will be happy and fulfilling, but if one partner wavers due to changes in their own conditions, it will lead to unfavorable outcomes.
- Decision 决策: Due to personal intelligence and good conditions, everything goes very smoothly. However, one must deeply understand the truth of life's impermanence, maintain moderation in all things, and remember that when things reach their extreme, they must reverse. Furthermore, one should not isolate oneself, fall into a predicament, or lose heart.

Changing Hexagram (Original)
Hsiâo Kwo indicates that (in the circumstances which it implies) there will be progress and attainment. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. (What the name denotes) may be done in small affairs, but not in great affairs. (It is like) the notes that come down from a bird on the wing;--to descend is better than to ascend. There will (in this way) be great good fortune.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
Hsiao Kuo hexagram. Success, this is a favorable divination. However, it is only suitable for small matters, not for great matters. A flying bird passes through the sky, leaving its voice by the ear, warning people: ascending leads to danger, while descending brings good fortune. The Image says: The lower trigram of this hexagram is Gen, representing Mountain; the upper trigram is Zhen, representing Thunder. Thunder over the mountain is the image of Hsiao Kuo. The superior man, observing this image, stands in awe of the heavenly thunder and dares not commit transgressions. Thus, in his conduct, he does not exceed in humility; in mourning, he does not exceed in grief; in expenditure, he does not exceed in thrift; he only seeks moderation.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Yin is compliant and Yang is trapped; gentleness and flexibility are in action. Maintain caution and self-control; rapid advance is unfavorable. Misfortune: For those who obtain this hexagram, all matters are unfavorable. It is suitable for small things, but not for great things. Furthermore, guard against disputes and litigation arising from one's own mistakes.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by the overlapping of two different trigrams (lower Gen, upper Zhen). Gen is Mountain, and Zhen is Thunder. Thunder rumbles over the mountain, which cannot but inspire awe. Yang is great and Yin is small; the four Yin lines on the outside exceed the two Yang lines in the middle, hence it is called 'Hsiao Kuo' (Preponderance of the Small), indicating a small excess.

Line Text (Original)
The second line, divided, shows its subject surrounded by screens so large and thick that at midday he can see from them the constellation of the Bushel. If he go (and try to enlighten his ruler who is thus emblemed), he will make himself to be viewed with suspicion and dislike. Let him cherish his feeling of sincere devotion that he may thereby move (his ruler's mind), and there will be good fortune.
Line Text (Translation)
Six Two: Piece small mats together to lie down and rest. At midday, someone says they see the Big Dipper. It seems someone among the traveling companions has lost their mind. Stimulating them might clear their mind. The Image says: Keeping sincerity in mind, it is manifest in every word and action, because this is expressing one's aspiration frankly and directly.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Auspicious. For those who obtain this line, there is the beauty of gaining wealth after long hardship; those in lawsuits will be cleared without arguing; those who are sick will recover. For officials, loyal advice is often blocked by corrupt opinions; they lose first but gain later.
Fu Peirong's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: Hold fast to the correct path; turn bad luck into good.
- Wealth 财运: Treat others with sincerity; part the clouds to see the moon.
- Household 家宅: Light and bright is suitable; initial doubt leads to eventual harmony.
- Health 身体: Angina; needs counseling and guidance.
Takashima Donsho's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: Able to endure hardship and remain steadfast in difficulty, turning bad luck into good.
- Business 营商: Insight is clouded, like darkness in broad daylight, making it impossible to handle business and leading to suspicion. One should treat others with utmost sincerity; obtaining others' assistance, profit can then be made.
- Fame & Career 功名: Bad fortune at first, good fortune in the end.
- Warfare 战征: Stationing troops among dense forests and lush grass, hidden and not advancing; moving forward might be disadvantageous; one must wait for internal support from the enemy's side, and once launched, a great victory will surely be achieved. Auspicious.
- Marriage 婚姻: Initial doubt leads to eventual harmony.
- Household 家宅: Flowers and trees around this house are too lush, blocking the sunlight and darkening the windows; it must be cleared to let in light to be auspicious.
- Illness 疾病: It is a troubled mind where accumulated doubts have turned into illness; gentle counseling is suitable, once the doubts are cleared, the sick body will heal itself.
- Lost Items 失物: Covered by dust and dirt; clear away the wild weeds to find it, or it may be found within containers.
- Pregnancy 六甲: Giving birth to a girl.
Changing Hexagram (Original)
Tâ Kwang indicates that (under the conditions which it symbolises) it will be advantageous to be firm and correct.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
Ta Chuang (The Power of the Great) Hexagram. A favorable divination. The Image says: The upper trigram of this hexagram is Zhen, Zhen is thunder; the lower trigram is Qian, Qian is heaven. Thunder rolling in the heavens is the image of the Power of the Great. Looking at this image, the gentleman, seeing the fearsome sudden thunder and the strictness of ritual laws, stands in awe and knows fear, adhering strictly to propriety.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Just and honorable, strong and grand; tolerant and harmonious, avoid impulsiveness. Minor fortune: For those who obtain this hexagram, their fortune is excessively strong. They should remain calm and act with caution; otherwise, mistakes will surely occur.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by stacking two different trigrams (Qian below, Zhen above). Zhen is thunder; Qian is heaven. Qian is firm, Zhen is movement. Thunder rolls in the heavens, clouds and thunder rumble, the scale is grand, Yang energy is robust and strong, and all things grow. Being firm, strong, and powerful, it is called Zhuang. Great and strong, hence the name Ta Chuang (The Power of the Great). The four Yang lines are strong and flourishing, active and achieving. The upper is upright and the lower is upright; when the pole is straight, the shadow is straight.

The third line, undivided, shows its subject with an (additional) screen of a large and thick banner, through which at midday he can see (the small) Mei star. (In the darkness) he breaks his right arm; but there will be no error.
Line Text (Translation)
Nine Three: Make the straw bedding thicker to lie down and rest. At midday, this person again says they see phantoms. Break his right arm. After this shock, perhaps he can be quiet. The Image says: Making the straw bedding thicker cannot serve any great purpose. Breaking his right arm means he will be disabled for life.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Average. For those who obtain this line, plans are difficult to achieve, or brightness is obscured; disputes and lawsuits arise daily, or there are ailments of the limbs, making it difficult to work. For officials, there is a sign of retirement.
Fu Peirong's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: Fortune is reversed; one must guard against disasters.
- Wealth 财运: Fluctuations are unpredictable; there are considerable losses.
- Household 家宅: Can only dwell here temporarily.
- Health 身体: Right arm injured.
Takashima Donsho's Commentary

- Business 营商: Guard against unpredictable fluctuations in commodity prices, leading to losses.
- Fame & Career 功名: Ultimately unusable.
- Illness 疾病: Guard against injury to the right arm.
- Household 家宅: Fields and gardens are overgrown, weeds are rampant, the right wing of the house has collapsed; it is only a temporary dwelling and ultimately unusable.
- Pregnancy 六甲: Giving birth to a girl.
Changing Hexagram (Original)
Kăn gives the intimation of ease and development. When (the time of) movement (which it indicates) comes, (the subject of the hexagram) will be found looking out with apprehension, and yet smiling and talking cheerfully. When the movement (like a crash of thunder) terrifies all within a hundred lî, he will be (like the sincere worshipper) who is not (startled into) letting go his ladle and (cup of) sacrificial spirits.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
The Zhen Hexagram. When the sacrifice is approached, the sound of thunder arrives, making some people tremble with fear; yet shortly afterward, they talk and laugh as usual. A sudden clap of thunder shocks a hundred li, yet some remain calm and composed, holding the sacrificial ladle without spilling a single drop of wine. The *Xiang Zhuan* (Treatise on the Symbols) says: The upper and lower trigrams of this hexagram are both Zhen, and Zhen is thunder. Thus, successive claps of thunder form the image of the Zhen Hexagram. The gentleman, in accordance with this, stands in awe and dread, examining and cultivating his character.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Successive thunderclaps resound; one should exert oneself and strive for progress. First difficult, then easy; first bitter, then sweet. Minor good fortune: Those who obtain this hexagram should rise up and strive, for much can be achieved; however, while the surface appears prosperous, there may be hidden difficulties within. One should be cautious in speech and behavior to avoid losses.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by doubling the same trigram (Zhen below, Zhen above). Zhen is thunder. The doubling of Zhen creates a resounding echo, which clears away stagnant air, leading to smooth progress and prosperity. In daily life, one should prepare for danger in times of peace, harboring a sense of reverence and fear without daring to slacken, so that even in the face of sudden emergencies, one remains calm, talking and laughing as usual.

Line Text (Translation)
Nine Four: Piece small mats together to lie down and rest. At midday, this person is still saying they see the Big Dipper; it seems they have not yet recovered to normal. Fortunately, they met their old innkeeper, and entrusting him to the old innkeeper brings peace and safety at last. The Image says: Piecing small mats together to rest anywhere is because the position is improper, just as the Nine Four yang line resides in a yin position. Seeing the Big Dipper at midday is perhaps because the sky is dark and dim. Meeting his old innkeeper is an auspicious journey.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Average. For those who obtain this line, brightness is obscured, but they will obtain explanation and resolution from others to gain good fortune. Officials suffer from suspicion of leaders and colleagues, their positions are unstable.
Fu Peirong's Commentary

Changing Hexagram (Original)
Ming Î indicates that (in the circumstances which it denotes) it will be advantageous to realise the difficulty (of the position), and maintain firm correctness.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
Ming I (Darkening of the light) Hexagram. It is beneficial to divine about difficult matters. The Image says: The inner hexagram of this hexagram is Li, Li is the sun; the outer hexagram is Kun, Kun is the earth. The sun sinking into the earth is the image of Darkening of the light. Observing this image, the gentleman governs the people and administers the government not by being harshly scrutinizing to show intelligence, but by being outwardly simple and inwardly wise, tolerating things and drawing close to the masses.
Shao Yong's Commentary
The sun enters into the earth, and the light is damaged; all things are obstructed, waiting for fortune. Inauspicious: For those who get this hexagram, their fortune is poor, and everything is laborious. They should firmly adhere to the correct path, be patient and self-respecting, and await the opportunity.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by doubling different trigrams (Li below, Kun above). Li is light, Kun is obedience; Li is the sun, Kun is the earth. The sun sinks into the earth, light is damaged, the future is unclear, and the environment is difficult. It is advisable to follow the times and nurture obscurity, firmly adhere to the correct path, be outwardly simple and inwardly wise, and hide one's light and nurture obscurity.

(What takes place as indicated by) Ko is believed in only after it has been accomplished. There will be great progress and success. Advantage will come from being firm and correct. (In that case) occasion for repentance will disappear.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
Hexagram Ge (Revolution/Molting). On the day of sacrifice, captives are used as human offerings; supreme success, auspicious divination. There is no regret. The Image says: The outer trigram of this hexagram is Dui, and Dui represents the marsh; the inner trigram is Li, and Li represents fire. Inside it steams and outside it presses, water dries up and grass withers, just like a great fire burning within a marsh; this is the image of the Revolution hexagram. The gentleman, observing this image, understands the cyclical changes of rising and falling marsh waters, and the withering and flourishing of grass and trees, and thus regulates the calendar and clarifies the seasons.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Many changes occur in affairs, stick to the correct path; follow Heaven and respond to humanity, implementing reforms. Moderately auspicious: For those who obtain this hexagram, all matters are in flux. It is advisable to discard the old and establish the new to correspond with the image of innovation, which will bring good fortune.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by the stacking of different trigrams (Li below, Dui above). Li is fire, Dui is marsh, and there is water inside the marsh. Water is above and flows down, while fire is below and rises. When fire is strong, water dries up; when water is vast, fire is extinguished. The two generate and also overcome each other, inevitably leading to reform. Revolution (change) is the fundamental law of the universe.

The topmost line, divided, shows its subject with his house made large, but only serving as a screen to his household. When he looks at his door, it is still, and there is nobody about it. For three years no one is to be seen. There will be evil.
Line Text (Translation)
Top Six: The house is empty, with straw mats scattered on the roof. Peering through the crack of the door, there is not a soul. It looks as if no one has lived here for years. This is a sign of misfortune. The Image says: Adding to and expanding the house, it seems this person is like a bird flying in the blue sky, self-satisfied and making a huge fortune. Peering through the crack of the door, there is not a soul; it seems excessive wealth has harmed his person, bringing sudden disaster, and he has fled for his life.

Changing Hexagram (Original)
Lî indicates that, (in regard to what it denotes), it will be advantageous to be firm and correct, and that thus there will be free course and success. Let (its subject) also nourish (a docility like that of) the cow, and there will be good fortune.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
Li Hexagram. Auspicious divination, smooth and prosperous. Raising a cow brings good fortune. The Image says: The sun rises today, and the sun rises tomorrow, continuing without pause; this is the image of Li. Observing this image, the nobility and princes illuminate the four quarters with an endless flow of light.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Clinging to light, being humble and advancing slowly; just and gentle, conforming and keeping to one's course brings good fortune. Minor good fortune: Those who obtain this hexagram should be humble and cautious, and progress steadily, then the future will be bright. Those who advance hastily or act on impulse will surely suffer losses.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by doubling the same trigram (Li below and Li above). Li means beauty and clinging (attachment); a single Yin line clings to the two Yang lines above and below. The hexagram symbolizes fire, hollow inside and bright outside. Li represents fire and brightness; the sun rises and sets repeatedly, running endlessly, with gentleness and compliance at heart.
