Revised 2026-10-24: retained practical pronunciation and consistency advice; withdrew generalizations linking ordinary names to ethnicity, immaturity, religion or sexualized occupations.

You can use your Chinese name and preferred romanization, or choose another everyday name. Neither choice establishes professionalism or belonging. The purpose is communication and personal comfort, not deciding which cultures have “normal” names.

W3C's account of personal names worldwide documents variation in order, family names, multiple names, characters and forms of address. English-speaking communities also use names from many languages. Someone's ethnicity is not a reason to prohibit a name of Japanese, Indian, Slavic or another origin.

A practical process

1. Choose three to five possibilities, including your current name or nickname if you wish. 2. Listen to pronunciations in the relevant region and say the full name aloud. Matching a short Chinese surname with a longer given name is a preference, not a rule. 3. Check spelling, nicknames and cultural background. Ask trusted people familiar with the target setting about a specific concern; one joke is not universal cultural consensus. 4. Try the name in a low-cost setting and notice whether you like responding to it. State your preference: “My name is …, and I go by …”. You can also ask people not to use a particular nickname. 5. Keep professional profiles and contact details easy to connect. For official records, follow the institution's requirements and distinguish a preferred name from the recorded identity; do not assume a nickname replaces it automatically.

SSA statistics concern names of babies born in the United States in a specified year. ONS figures concern England and Wales. Neither measures all English-speaking populations, adult professional acceptance or respect. The earlier article's 2025 SSA top-ten list is verifiable, but its rankings cannot establish the best names for Chinese adults.

Word names, religious or mythological names, nicknames, older styles and names from other languages can be used by real people. A particular association may affect your preference; it is not evidence of the bearer's competence or character. Familiar women's names should not be labelled collectively as sexualized or unprofessional.

Alex, Daniel, Emily and Robin can be practice candidates, not an ethnicity-based approved list. For a child, consider family languages, later autonomy and registration requirements. A numerology calculation cannot demonstrate that a name brings respect, employment or good fortune.
